THE Open Relay

THE International Intergalactic Global Open Mountain Bike Team Relay Championship of the Universe, Including the Anti-Matter One (There, That Should About Cover It)

April 2, 2011 @ the Oesterling Farm in Marysville, PA
This thing ain’t like any other team relay you’ve ever done – well unless you were here last year or the year before or the one before that or maybe took part in the mountain bike world championships.

It’s semi-styled after the World Championship Relay and the ubiquitous 12/24 hour team relay format. It also takes a cue from the Rockville Bridge Cyclocross Relay from the PA state championship in 2005 where we started this way too fun event.

We took the tasty bits of these other races, added some new ingredients like handicapping so every team has a legit shot at the win, tossed ‘em in a blender, and came up with something awfully yummy for your enjoyment.

WHILE YOU’RE ON BIKEREG MAKE SURE YOU’RE REG’D FOR THE MASS FOR 2011

– MASS NUMBER PICK UP @ Mid-Atlantic Timing Trailer following the conclusion of racing and scoring.

– This is a killer early season mtb race disguised as a party disguised as a VO2 interval workout disguised as a way for me to get rich.

– All teams get some sort of handicapping points to start the event and then each lap completed is worth points.  The team with the most points at the end of the race gets the perpetual Cup (which now has some totally incorrect name on it since I have a need to change the title of this thing every year).  The handicapping makes winning the race a possibility for every team entered.

Past results show this actually works like we planned!
(which is sort of amazing since I pulled the whole thing outta my butt)
2007 – VisitPA.com (4 elite men)
2008 – VisitPA.com (4 elite men)
2009 – Whiskey Springs Devo Team (4 beginner Jrs!)
2010 – MudHoneys (3 expert women, 1 sport woman)

2011– YOU?

The rest of the podium has been filled with sports, beginners, elites and masters and combos of all in various teams.
This really is open to be won by any team!

If you still don’t think you can win it or if you are more concerned about drinking some brews than going hard then
dress up and get yourselves the costume prize.
Or just drink.
Its a kick ass way to start the season, the short hard lap efforts are suburb race training, and its almost too much fun.

Almost.

Except for the puking at the end of the lap bit.

Cannondale continues to Rock.  Their 29ers are hella fast.
At least that’s what guys who are in shape tell me.
They are so choice.  If you have the means I highly recommend picking one up.
